Join Bastyr University for the 19th Annual Herb and Food Fair on Saturday, May 20th, a free festival that brings thousands of visitors to the Kenmore campus. With gardens blooming and the campus forest buzzing with new life, it's a great time to soak up spring colors and learn about the endless uses of plants. The theme for this year's event is "Plant as Partners: grow, adapt, transform.”

Festival Activities

Keynote Speakers

David Winston, Herbalist, Author, and Ethnobotanist

David Winston is an Herbalist and Ethnobotanist with 47 years of training in Chinese, Native American and Western/Eclectic herbal traditions.  He has been in clinical practice for 40 years and is an herbal consultant to physicians, herbalists and researchers throughout the USA and Canada. In 2013 David was presented with the Natural Products Association (NPA) Clinician’s Award and awarded a fellowship by the Irish Register of Herbalists. David is the founder/director of the Herbal Therapeutics Research Library and the dean of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies, a two-year training program in clinical herbal medicine. He is an internationally known lecturer and frequently teaches at medical schools, symposia, and herb conferences.  He is the president of Herbalist & Alchemist, Inc. a manufacturer that produces herbal products that blend the art and science of the world’s great herbal traditions. In addition, David is a founding/professional member of the American Herbalist Guild, he has served four terms on the Board of Directors and he is on the American Botanical Council's Advisory Board. David has authored and co-authored many books about herbal therapeutics, indications, and safety as well as books on strength, stamina, and stress relief.

 

Mark Musick, Author, Gardener

An innovator, Musick has always been very involved in the Puget Sound food community. He helped establish the Tilth Foundation in the 1970s, a movement that now encompasses both Oregon and Washington and which has developed into an organization involved in organic farming and urban ecology. From 1997 to 2002 he worked as the farm program manager for the Pike Place Market, and helped start the Market's CSA and Organic Wednesdays programs. Recently, he has worked with Seattle Public Utilities to help reduce edible, uneaten food from restaurants and hotels from going into the landfill and direct it to the city's food banks instead. Musick's passion and drive helps him to envision big changes and then go forth and make them happen. He edited the Tilth journal, organized local chapters, and published three books: Winter Gardening in the Maritime Northwest, The Future Is Abundant, and Seattle Tilth’s Maritime Northwest Garden Guide. 

 

Vesanto Melina, Registered Dietitian, Nutritional consultant

With over 50 years of experience in the food and nutrition field, Vesanto Melina is a Registered Dietitian and internationally recognized speaker and nutrition consultant. Her expertise is on vegetarian, vegan and raw food diets and is a co-author of many award-winning nutrition books and cookbooks. Her passion and extensive knowledge in the field stems from being a former academic nutrition instructor here at Bastyr and the University of British Columbia, an author of peer-reviewed journal articles and as a nutrition consultant to individuals, government organizations and the food industry. She is the most recent recipient of Canada’s highest award offered to dietitians-- the Ryley Jeffs Memorial Lecture Award.

 

Transportation and Parking

Visitors can park for free at the Kenmore Park and Ride (at 7346 N.E. Bothell Way) and take the free Bastyr shuttle directly to the Herb and Food Fair. The bus runs every 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Limited parking is also available on campus for $5. Bastyr University is located at 14500 Juanita Drive N.E., Kenmore, adjacent to St. Edward State Park. No event parking is permitted at St. Edward State Park.
