Get Your Symptoms Under Control Through Biofeedback

Is your health condition stress-related? Whether you realize it or not, it might be. Many studies have proven that mental/emotional “stress” causes physical changes in the body, which can lead to health problems. Studies also show that the body heals faster and the immune system operates better when the body is in a state of relaxation. Consistent use of mind-body techniques such as biofeedback can help produce this health-promoting state.

What Is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a mind-body technique that helps people use their own bodily signals to improve their health and well-being. By monitoring bodily signals, people can gain control over physiological reactions that are usually considered unconscious or automatic.

Since the term “biofeedback” was coined in 1969, the practice of biofeedback has involved the use of feedback instruments (often machines) that measure a variety of indicators including brain-wave activity, heart rate and skin temperature.

In sessions at Bastyr Center for Natural Health, we monitor the body’s physiological reactions using modern biofeedback equipment that can measure your respiration, heartbeat, temperature, and even muscle tension. As part of our sessions, we guide you through stress-reduction exercises that can be easily done at home.

Is It Effective?

Biofeedback has proven useful in combating such ailments as: addictions, anxiety, asthma, insomnia, chronic pain, depression, fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure and irritable bowel syndrome.

What Conditions Respond to Biofeedback?

Although it is not a “sure cure” for any disease or ailment, and sometimes counseling or other modalities are good adjunct treatments, biofeedback can help improve almost any ailment. Conditions for which biofeedback has traditionally been helpful include addictions, anxiety, asthma, ADD/ADHD, chronic insomnia, chronic pain, depression, fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, hyperactivity, irritable bowel syndrome, PMS, poor muscle control, Raynaud’s disease and urinary (or bowel) incontinence.
