Food banks and their clients appreciate the extra effort that goes into donating nutritious food.

Healthier Holiday Food Donations

While many people give to local food banks and soup kitchens year-round, the holidays always inspire much greater giving in our communities. As we enter the giving season once again, it’s worth considering the quality of the food we give, as well as the quantity.

According to The Seattle Times, food bank operators report that most people donate only low-cost items. Of course people give with the best of intentions, but the low-cost foods are typically high in sodium, calories and sugar, while low in nutritional value. This year it might be worth taking an extra moment to consider the quality of the foods we donate. Food bank operators offered these suggestions for low-cost, high-quality foods:

  • Low-sugar cereal
  • Peanut butter
  • Cans or plastic containers of juice (100% juice is best)
  • Canned vegetables, any variety, labeled “light” or “low-sodium.”
  • Bags of pinto or black beans
  • Rice
  • Canned tuna fish
  • Powdered milk fortified with vitamin D

Donors are urged to avoid:

  • Foods high in sodium, fat, oils or sugar
  • Chips, candy, cookies or crackers
  • Sugary beverages
  • Items in glass bottles
  • Items that are expired or in damaged packaging

Don’t forget that food banks can always make good use of cash donations, and can often stretch your dollar through bulk purchasing.
