What You Should Know — Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The following article was adapted and reprinted by permission from Delicious Magazine.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) sufferers face more than the devastating symptoms of their disease. They also share the frustration of medical professionals who struggle to understand this illness and find ways to treat it. Learn how the world of natural medicine including herbs and nutrients can help people living with CFS.

Delicious Magazine asked Jane Guiltinan, ND, clinical professor and director of the Bastyr Center for Women’s Wellness, questions about CFS. If you suspect you have this health problem, see a doctor immediately. The information in this article should not be used as a self-diagnosis.

DM: What is chronic fatigue syndrome? Is it just feeling tired all the time, or is there something more to it?

Guiltinan: CFS is a debilitating condition that manifests primarily as severe, prolonged fatigue. The reason it's termed a syndrome is that many other symptoms may also be present.

DM: What are the symptoms of CFS, and how will I know if I have it?

Guiltinan: Symptoms of CFS include:

  • Severe, persistent fatigue of more than six months duration
  • Recurrent sore throat
  • Lymph node swelling
  • Headache
  • Muscle and/or joint pain
  • Intestinal discomfort
  • Depression
  • Loss of ability to focus and concentrate
  • Sleep disorders

The only way to know if you have CFS is see your health provider. She or he will probably do a series of tests to rule out other diseases and then may make the diagnosis based on the clinical findings.
