What happens at a physical medicine appointment?

Typically an appointment will begin with a verbal interview, possibly followed by a physical examination.  There are many different treatments options. Some treatments may involve immersion in water, application of hot or cold water, or massage. The practitioner can explain what each type of treatment entails.

What do I wear for hydrotherapy or peat bath treatments?

You can wear what is comfortable for you – a bathing suit, undergarments, loose clothing or no clothing. There will be practitioners monitoring the treatment and we want you to be relaxed and comfortable. It is advisable to call beforehand (206.834.4101) regarding what your treatment will entail and how to best prepare.

What do I wear for a soft-tissue manipulation treatment?

Again, patient comfort is paramount. Most patients will disrobe and lie beneath a sheet. The practitioner will uncover only the portion of the body being treated to keep you warm and comfortable. If you prefer to remain clothed or partially clothed, please let the practitioner know.

What will I feel like after soft-tissue manipulation or hydrotherapy?

Many people feel very relaxed. You may want to consider whether you have other obligations, such as returning to a job, when scheduling an appointment. Your hair may be wet or there may be massage oil or cream on your body. Call beforehand (206.834.3101) to find out what to expect with your scheduled treatment.

Does Bastyr do chiropractic work?

Naturopathic physicians are trained to do what is generally termed as “osseous” or “spinal” manipulation. The goal of this type of treatment is to restore normal alignment and motion to the bones of the spine. While it is similar to what many chiropractors do, we do not use the term “chiropractic.” Naturopathic physicians often combine spinal manipulation with other types of treatment such as hydrotherapy, massage, and exercise.

Can I make an appointment in physical medicine if I don’t have a complaint and just want a massage?

Yes, but you will be asked a series of questions so the health care team can assess your overall condition and determine the best approach. We don’t offer soft-tissue manipulation (massage) services without a medical interview, an assessment of your health condition, and possibly, a physical exam.
