Bastyr to Offer Affordable Women's Health Screenings

Women's health screenings serve a crucial role in reducing mortality and morbidity by catching signs and symptoms of breast and cervical cancer early. Yet, some women don't receive routine screenings, because they cannot afford to pay for them. That's why Bastyr is thrilled to announce its participation in the federally- and locally-funded program, the Washington Breast and Cervical Health Program (WBCHP). This program, which provides mammogram and pap screenings as well as prompt access to follow-up care, serves women age 40-60 with no insurance or whose income is 250 percent of the federal poverty level. To find out if you qualify for this program, call (206) 834-4101.

Bastyr Offers Acupuncture for Chronic Health Issues
Why acupuncture worksIf your health problems have lingered no matter what you've tried, perhaps the solution lies in the ancient Chinese healing art of acupuncture. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have helped people in China for thousands of years, and research studies have proven acupuncture's effectiveness in alleviating pain and helping with pain-related disorders. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can also help with stress, insomnia, allergies, PMS and fatigue. Learn more about our acupuncture and Oriental medicine services and find out more about why acupuncture works.

American Ginseng May Help Curb Colds
You've heard that vitamin C and echinacea can help preventing colds and/or shorten their duration. Now there's another herb you may want to add your arsenal of cold- and flu-fighters: American ginseng. A recent study showed that people who took this herb for four months experienced fewer colds, and, when they did catch a cold, had one that was less severe. Read more about this study.

Explore Natural Cures for Depression
If you or someone you know struggles with depression during the winter or any season help is available. While conventional antidepressants are sometimes warranted, many natural options can provide relief, including St John's wort, SAM-e, zinc, omega 3's, and even lavender essential oil. Find out more about these and other natural mood-lifters on our website.

Healthy Recipe: Quick Lemon and Quinoa Salad
This recipe makes a perfect side salad for lunches or dinners, potlucks and family gatherings. The lemon and garlic flavors combine to make a great-tasting, healthful addition to any meal. Quinoa is a gluten-free grain that is packed with protein, and you can find it at health food stores or the health-food section of your regular grocery store. Get the recipe.
